SensoRun
The Project/ The Challenge
Heart rate monitors have long been established in running to measure heart rate and control cardiovascular stress during training and competition. However, continuous measurement of the biomechanical stress on the musculoskeletal system has not been possible until now.
-
Excessive volume, intensity, or too rapid an increase in running activity are the most common causes.
-
30% of all runners struggle with overuse injuries of the musculoskeletal system.
-
Approximately 12.5 million people in Germany go jogging regularly.
Our Solution
In 2015, on the initiative of Dieter Baumann (1992 Olympic champion in the 5000m), we launched a project on sensory motion analysis in collaboration with Sportmedizin Tübingen.
Using a Bosch sensor, we were able to demonstrate for the first time worldwide in a sports science study that tibial rotation is a reliable measurement indicator for pronation.
The Result
Following the successful study, SensoRun GmbH was founded at the end of 2017 and the prototype was developed into a product. SensoRun™ is a system consisting of two sensors and a mobile app that enables continuous biomechanical monitoring of stress and balance while running.
SensoRun™ is suitable for both preventing injuries and improving performance, and is the ideal complement to a heart rate monitor.
Technologies Used
We developed the mobile app with React Native for iOS and Android in parallel, while the backend is based on Firebase. We bring the following expertise to the project, including:
-
Connection of Sensors and Evaluation of Sensor Data
-
Integration of Various Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) on Mobile Platforms (e.g., BLE, GPS, Voice, etc.)
-
Analytics and Machine Learning With C# and Python
New Possibilities
We are happy to contribute the expertise we have gained during the development of SensoRun™ to projects as a development partner:
-
Technical expertise: Sensor platform consisting of sensors, electronics, wireless communication, mobile app, and cloud infrastructure
-
Analytical expertise: Data science for evaluating and processing raw data, calculating practical metrics from raw sensor data and sports science studies
-
Software development expertise: Technology stack for mobile apps and corresponding teams
-
Reference data: Study data for various forms of movement, including expert evaluations
Did you know?
Together with the German Volleyball Association, we have developed SensoJump, a prototype that determines the height and number of jumps in jumping sports.
In equestrian sports, we were able to use SensoRun technology to visualize incipient lameness in horses even before it became visually apparent.
A wide range of other possible applications: from occupational safety to rehabilitation.
It all started with Dieter Baumann. He approached me and asked for software that would enable runners to design better and more personalized training programs. But such software didn't exist. Together with Inga Krauß from Sportmedizin Tübingen, we discussed the possibilities, conducted an initial study, and began development.
